The Circus

“The Circus” is a series of work investigating the overlay of text, languages and images through experimenting with different formats and processes: Handwriting, drawing, photography, digital, risograph and letterpress print.

The project transpired from an invitation to participate in Poem Atlas and Corrupted Poetry’s visual poetry exhibition “Temporary Spaces”. Starting with a collection of unbound images in “Circus” (2020) evolving into a digitally printed book investigating the overlay of text, languages and images in My Friend from the Circus (2020). The ideas and material are further developed in My Friend the Girl from the Circus (2020) through a mixture of copying, drawing, digital, risograph and letterpress printing. The book is then altered and transformed into “Min venn jenta frå sirkuset” to illustrate a potential reconstruction of old memories. “The Circus” was then exhibited on MA Book Arts 2020’s Instagram account. Finally, the material was used to explore moving text.

My Friend from the Circus (2020) and My Friend the Girl from the Circus (2020) are published by Mellom Press.

Circus

Circus is a series of images combined with drawings and bilingual text exploring the memories of a multipurpose space from Silje’s childhood. The poems were part of “Temporary Spaces” – a visual poetry exhibition at The Poetry Society from 20th January to 22nd February.

My Friend from the Circus (2020)

The overlay of text, languages and images invites the reader to rethink the space.

My Friend the Girl from the Circus (2020)

A reminiscent look at Silje Ree’s childhood through a mixture of digital, risograph, drawing, handwriting and letterpress printing.

Min venn jenta frå sirkuset

Waiting for the European Poetry Festival to commence in October, Silje Ree used the tools she could find at home to alter and erase a copy of her ‘My Friend the Girl from the Circus’. This work was first published by The European Poetry Festival and is featured in 3am:magazine.

Sirkuset – A micro-exhibit

MA Book Arts presents “Books @Home” – a micro-exhibition of books in different locations. The exhibit is a result of a mini-project taking place over a couple of days to experiment and create work. Placing books in a new context to communicate the different themes, creating an exhibition space across rooms.

Moving text

Experimenting with moving text to explore code-switching.
